In conjunction with the upcoming University of Dayton Ethnic & Diversity Caucus, TEJAS, in partnership with the K12 Gallery, is sponsoring an exhibition at K12 Gallery/’TEJAS that will feature the work of local immigrant & refugee artists. They are currently looking for artists & craftspeople who would like to participate in the show and workshop events surrounding the exhibition.
The exhibit is part of the American Immigration: A Local Perspective; Exhibition & Workshop Series. It is funded through the generous support of the Levin Foundation.
Exhibition Dates: November 16-December 21, 2012
Opening Reception: Friday, November 16, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Submission Deadline: October 26, 2012
The exhibition is meant to be a celebration of local immigrants living in and around Dayton, Ohio, from both the recently arrived to those for whom the immigrant experience is a heritage. Participation in the Ethnic & Diversity Caucus at University of Dayton and collaborations with other organizations has made K12/TEJAS Gallery aware of the need for more support & collaboration for/with immigrant artists. The goal is to provide an artistic home for immigrant artists: a place for them to create, exhibit, teach, and connect.
The curators are looking for work that tells a story (about self, family, journeys, assimilation, identity, place, pride, protest, struggles, victories, or cultural legacies). They are also interested in artists & craftspeople that utilize materials & techniques associated with their cultural heritage (ex: Japanese Ink Paintings, Turkish Calligraphy or African Wood Carvings).
In support of local artists and craftspeople that would like to show in the exhibition but need some help in the arena of making their work, K12/TEJAS will host a series of 3 daytime workshop events meant to provide studio time & guidance from professional artists. These will be held Wednesday afternoons in September & October from 12:30-2:30, (Sept. 26, Oct. 10 & 24). Individuals wishing to participate in the exhibition, but not having current pieces to show are encouraged to attend the workshops in order to make their envisioned artwork. Please RSVP one week prior. Workshop cost is $25 per session; 10 scholarships are available for those needing financial assistance.
